Choosing the Correct LED Bulb
Can I replace an incandescent navigation-light bulb with an LED bulb?
In many cases, yes. Dr. LED specializes in LED replacement bulbs for many existing marine navigation-light fixtures. The correct replacement depends on the fixture manufacturer, fixture series, bulb base, available space, lens color, bulb orientation, operating voltage, and required visibility range.
Use the Dr. LED cross-reference guide and bulb-selection guide before ordering. When the fixture cannot be identified, contact Dr. LED and provide clear photographs of the fixture, original bulb, bulb base, socket, lens, and any model markings.
What information is needed to identify the correct replacement bulb?
The most useful information includes:
- Fixture manufacturer
- Fixture model or series
- Original bulb number
- Bulb-base type
- Operating voltage
- Lens color
- Orientation of the bulb inside the fixture
- Available clearance inside the fixture

Do I have to replace the complete navigation-light fixture?
Not always. Many existing fixtures can be upgraded by replacing only the incandescent bulb with a compatible Dr. LED replacement. However, the fixture must be in serviceable condition, properly sealed, electrically sound, and compatible with the selected LED bulb.

Navigation Light Performance and Compliance
What does 2NM mean?
“2NM” means that a navigation light is intended to meet the required luminous intensity for visibility at a distance of two nautical miles under the applicable test conditions.
Visibility depends on the complete lighting system, including the LED bulb, fixture, lens, optical alignment, voltage, installation, and condition of the fixture.
Are Dr. LED navigation bulbs 2NM, 3NM, or 6NM certified?
Selected Dr. LED navigation-light replacement bulbs are independently certified for 2NM, 3NM, or 6NM visibility when installed in the specific fixture, lens, voltage, and installation combinations identified on the applicable product page or technical documentation. Certification applies only to the tested bulb-and-fixture combination.
Many of our navigation-light bulbs are built using the same proven optical and electronic design as our certified products. As a result, some models are 2NM or 3NM for compatible applications, even though not every bulb-and-fixture combination has been independently certified.

What does ABYC A-16 compliant mean?
ABYC A-16 is a navigation-light standard used for recreational boats. Selected Dr. LED bulb-and-fixture combinations have been independently tested and verified for conformance with applicable ABYC A-16 requirements.
Compliance applies only to the identified bulb, fixture, lens, voltage, and installation combination published for that product.
LED Color and Navigation-Light Lenses
Which LED color should be used behind a navigation-light lens?
For best optical performance, use:
- White LED behind a clear or white lens
- Red LED behind a red lens
- Green LED behind a green lens
- Bi-color LED behind a red-and-green bi-color lens
- Tri-color LED behind a tri-color lens
The LED color should normally match the corresponding navigation-light lens. Confirm options on the relevant navigation LED product page.
Why should I use a red LED behind a red lens?
An incandescent bulb emits a broad spectrum of light, much of which is filtered out by a colored lens. A red LED emits light concentrated in the wavelength range needed by a red navigation lens, allowing more useful light to pass through the lens.
The same principle applies to a green LED behind a green lens. Matching the LED color to the lens improves optical efficiency and helps produce the correct navigation-light color while using less electrical power.
Can I use a white LED behind a red or green lens?
A white LED is generally not the best choice behind a red or green navigation-light lens. White LEDs do not produce equal energy across all visible wavelengths, and much of their output may be blocked by a colored lens.
Use a dedicated red or green LED whenever one is available for your application.
Installation and Electrical Compatibility
Are Dr. LED replacement bulbs difficult to install?
Many Dr. LED replacement bulbs are direct 1-to-1 replacements that install directly into the existing socket. Installation requirements may vary depending on the fixture, bulb base, available clearance, bulb orientation, and socket condition.
Before installation:
- Switch off electrical power
- Confirm the operating voltage
- Confirm the correct bulb base
- Inspect the socket and wiring
- Inspect the fixture seal and lens
- Make sure the bulb fits without forcing it
Is polarity important?
Many Dr. LED bulbs are non-polarized. Polarity may be important for some LED products. If a bulb does not illuminate after installation, switch off the power and check the product instructions.
Where permitted by the fixture and product design, reversing the bulb or correcting the positive and negative wiring may resolve the issue. Never alter the wiring without first disconnecting power.
Can the same bulb be used on both 12V and 24V systems?
Many Dr. LED bulbs are multi-voltage and work on both 12V and 24V systems.
Only when the product page or product label specifically states that the bulb supports both voltage systems.
Do not assume that every 12V bulb is suitable for 24V operation. Applying voltage outside the specified range may damage the bulb and may void the warranty. Check voltage ratings on the product page or in the online store.
Why do bulb orientation and fixture clearance matter?
Navigation-light bulbs may need to direct light toward specific parts of the lens. The bulb must be installed in the intended orientation to produce the correct horizontal and vertical light distribution.
The fixture must also provide enough space for the replacement bulb without contact with the lens, cover, reflector, or electrical terminals.
Can I install an LED conversion disk in a dome light?
Dr. LED dome-light conversion kits include two plug-in pigtail adapters—one for bayonet sockets and one for bi-pin sockets—allowing the LED conversion kit to fit a wide range of existing marine dome-light fixtures.
The original incandescent bulb is removed, the correct connector is inserted into the existing socket, and the LED disk is secured inside the fixture.

Troubleshooting
Why does my new LED bulb not illuminate?
Possible causes include:
- Incorrect polarity
- Incorrect operating voltage
- Corroded socket contacts
- Loose wiring
- Blown fuse
- Poor ground connection
- Incorrect bulb base
- Defective switch
- Incompatible dimmer
- Incorrect installation
Switch off the power before inspecting the fixture. If the issue continues, contact Dr. LED technical support.
Why is my LED bulb flickering?
Flickering may be caused by unstable voltage, corroded contacts, loose wiring, a failing switch, an incompatible dimmer, a poor electrical ground, or voltage fluctuations from charging equipment.
Inspect the complete electrical circuit rather than assuming the bulb is defective.
Can voltage spikes damage LED bulbs?
Yes. Severe over-voltage, lightning-related surges, wiring faults, accidental connection to the wrong voltage, or unstable charging equipment can damage LED electronics.
Confirm that the vessel’s electrical system remains within the specified operating range for the product.
Can moisture damage an LED bulb?
Moisture can damage electronic products and cause corrosion in sockets, contacts, circuit boards, and wiring. The fixture should remain properly sealed and maintained.
An LED replacement bulb should not be expected to correct a leaking, cracked, corroded, or poorly sealed fixture.
Why does the fixture feel warm?
LED products consume less energy and usually produce less heat than comparable incandescent bulbs, but they still generate heat during operation.
Some Dr. LED products use metal housings or heat sinks to move heat away from the LED. A warm housing does not necessarily indicate a defect, but the fixture must be installed according to its instructions and must not be covered with insulating material.
Batteries and Rechargeable Products
Is a rechargeable battery a consumable item?
Yes. Rechargeable batteries gradually lose capacity through age, charging cycles, storage conditions, and use. Battery replacement may eventually be necessary even when the light itself remains serviceable.
How should a rechargeable searchlight battery be stored?
Rechargeable batteries should not be left discharged for extended periods. Charge the battery according to the product instructions before storage and recharge it periodically when the product is not in regular use.
Extreme heat, freezing temperatures, and prolonged deep discharge can shorten battery life. For product-specific guidance, check the listing in the Dr. LED store or contact Dr. LED.
Can batteries be shipped internationally?
Battery shipping is subject to carrier, postal, airline, customs, and hazardous-material regulations. Shipping options may vary by destination and battery chemistry.

Warranty and Product Support
What should I do if I believe a Dr. LED product is defective?
First check:
- Supply voltage

If the problem remains, contact Dr. LED with the product number, purchase information, fixture information, photographs, and a description of the electrical system and symptoms.
What warranty applies to Dr. LED products?
Dr. LED products are warranted for one year against defects in material and workmanship. Any product developing such a defect within this period will be repaired or replaced at Dr. LED’s option, provided it is sent prepaid with proof of purchase and $5.00 per return item for handling. This limited warranty does not cover damage from accident or misuse, or incidental expenses resulting from product failure.
