What to Look for When Choosing a Marine LED Bulb

USCG Marine Safety Alert 13-18

USCG Marine Safety Alert 13-18 (PDF)

Dr. LED marine LED products have been tested with a marine VHF radio using the procedures described in USCG Marine Safety Alert 13-18 . Our products showed no detectable radio interference during testing and also comply with FCC Part 15B requirements for electromagnetic emissions.

Not all marine LED bulbs are engineered to the same standard. When selecting an LED replacement bulb, consider the following factors:

  • Radio Frequency Interference (RFI): Poorly designed LED bulbs can generate electrical noise that interferes with marine VHF, AIS, and other onboard radio communications, creating a potential safety hazard.
  • Non-Polarized Design: Polarized LED bulbs have ~a 50% chance of not illuminating on first installation if the polarity is reversed. In fixtures with single-contact sockets, they may not operate at all without rewiring. Dr. LED's non-polarized designs eliminate this issue.
  • Correct Light Direction: In some fixtures, such as step lights and courtesy lights, polarized bulbs may illuminate in the wrong direction because of socket polarity, reducing lighting effectiveness.
  • Regulated Power Supply: LED bulbs without proper voltage and current regulation are more susceptible to voltage fluctuations found in marine electrical systems, often resulting in overheating, inconsistent brightness, and premature failure.
  • Corrosion Protection: Components without waterproof protective coatings are more vulnerable to moisture and saltwater corrosion, significantly reducing service life.
  • Corrosion-Resistant Contacts: High-quality marine LED bulbs use corrosion-resistant contacts. Low-grade iron contacts can rust quickly in marine environments, leading to poor electrical connections.
  • Proper Thermal Design: Over-driven LEDs and inadequate thermal management shorten LED life and reduce long-term reliability.
  • Consistent Light Color: Premium LEDs maintain tight color consistency from bulb to bulb, while lower-quality LEDs often exhibit noticeable variations in color temperature and brightness.
  • Quality Construction: Securely mounted electronic components and robust mechanical construction improve resistance to vibration and shock, helping ensure reliable operation in demanding marine environments.
